See the evidence for yourself
Twenty-eight open indicators from the World Bank, for all 54 African countries. Look at one place, compare many, or ask whether two things go together. Nothing is loaded until you press the button.
The explorer needs JavaScript. Without it you can read the same figures on data.worldbank.org, or browse our list of open datasets.
Reading the figures with care
How to read it
- Each country shows its most recent figure, up to the year you choose. Years differ between countries, and the tool says so.
- Hatched areas on the map mean the World Bank has no figure for that country.
- Rankings and maps compare countries. They do not say why a country scores as it does.
- Every chart has a table with the same numbers, and you can download them as CSV.
Where the numbers come from
- World Bank, World Development Indicators, licensed CC BY 4.0. Several series are compiled from other bodies such as the ITU, UNESCO, UN Population Division and the IMF. Each indicator links to its official definition.
- Figures are requested from the World Bank's public API by your browser, when you press the button. We do not store, copy or alter them.
- Country borders are simplified outlines from Natural Earth (public domain). They show where countries are, not where borders are disputed.
What this cannot tell you
- Averages hide people. A country figure says little about a city, a region or one family.
- Two measures that move together are not proof that one causes the other.
- These are national statistics. They are not a view on any company, builder or investment, and they are not financial advice.
- Recent years are sometimes revised. If it matters, check the World Bank page.
